Prayer At OCV
The Bible demonstrates the importance and need for both intercessory and in-person prayer. We believe that we are called to pray for people, just as Jesus did.
Our Intercessory Prayer Team receives prayer requests from the congregation and commits to praying over them. Intercessory prayer simply means praying on someone else's behalf. Jesus was an intercessor, praying for his disciples, for th believers, and for Jerusalem.
Our Sunday Morning Prayer Team prays for people when requests arise in the moment in the moment during the communion time in our Sunday service. They use the Five Step Prayer Model to pray for others.
The Five Step Prayer Model
The Five Step Prayer Model is a relational, interactive way we pray for others while listening to the Holy Spirit. When we pray for someone, there should be things that they experience every time: God's compassion and kindness, listening to God on someone's behalf (John 5:19), spiritual authority, and normalcy.
The Steps
Step 1: Discussion – Introduce yourself and ask the person what they want prayer for.
Step 2: Discernment – L-shaped listening: to God and to the other person. What is God saying to us? What does He have for the person?
Step 3: Diagnosis – Discernment into action. What kind of prayers should we pray? (Intercessory, Biblical commands, prophetic words)
Step 4: Pray – Ask if you can put your hand on their shoulder and ask the person to assume a receiving posture. Keep your eyes open to observe what the Lord is doing.
Step 5: Next Steps – Check in with the person and ask how they’re doing. Help them make a plan to continue their journey with Jesus.
